Wall at Big Temple damaged in rain
A portion of the wall, a mortar and lime structure, at the Vagana mandapam at the Big Temple in Thanjavur was damaged during heavy rain on Thursday.
Official sources said that the structure got weakened. A small portion of the structure located at a height of about 35 feet from the ground level was damaged.
Officials from the Archaeological Survey of India, which maintains the temple, inspected the area and said that steps would be taken for its immediate restoration. Sources of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, which is responsible for religious rituals at the temple, said that the damaged structure formed part of a wall at the northern end and not in the vicinity of the presiding deity or any shrine. The need for any religious rituals did not arise and the ASI officials had promised to repair it immediately.
